Landscape Paintings

Landscape Most of my landscapes have been painted in the open air. In fact, my holiday tradition for the longest time was to go out painting--to the mountains, to the water...I never knew until I was there.

Christmas day was my favorite, then Thanksgiving. Few other people shared this tradition, so traffic was always 'like the good old days,' and once the right place was found, I could generally paint undisturbed. The biggest challenge, of course, was finding someplace open for breakfast.

I've always painted from an intentionally simple palette. Sometimes nothing more than red, blue, yellow, black and white. I also paint with brushes whose touch I love--whose bristles are long enough to dance on the canvas, and whose width would generally be considered too large for the canvas size and subject matter. Large enough to keep me focused on what really matters.

Viewing my own landscape paintings is like reading a diary. Each one is a page to be read over and over again.

Christmas Hillside
Oil on canvas
8" x 12"

I painted this little piece from the trunk of my car. The Skagit River was to my back, and I remember counting eleven eagles soaring above the ridge as I painted. I know, hard to believe. A lovely Christmas gift, indeed.

Two Brush Strokes
Oil on canvas
12" x 16"

This one was painted from the front seat of my car.
It was a cold day.

It's the trees and shrubs that gave the painting its title, having been laid down in two strokes--one quick sweep across the canvas to the right for the trees, and for the shrubs in the foreground, a second dancinging-and-skipping stroke to the left.

Then a few more dabs, and that was it.

White Horse Pond

Witness the many tiny white dots.

Raindrops couldn't help but
add their fingers to the painting.
Oil and water refuse to mix.

Landscape
Christmas Celebration
Oil on canvas

The "medium" for this one should actually read,
"Oil, raindrops, random bugs on canvas."

Look closely, you'll see them all.
Such are the joys of painting outdoors.
